- p 152 SL Armour ModificationsUnder the new system of Rolemaster armour can be upgraded in incremental lots. For instance: Biryn has AT 14, he wishes to purchase AT 16 but does not want the penalties, particularly in the area of Minimum Maneuver Penalties (MMP) and Missile Penalties. So he purchases a fitted suit of Chainmail from a professional smith. The prices are calculated thusly.
The Armour penalties cannot be reduced beyond the category minimums, in this case past AT 13. The full length suit of Chain Mail armour would normally cost 5.8 gp. This will give AT 16 with all of the associated penalties. Biryn wishes to reduce first the Minimum Maneuver Penalty and then the Missile Penalty. The smith measures Biryn and adds a slit up the side and a looser fit around the torso to better facilitate movement. He also makes it out of a finer quality and lighter steel, imported especially. This reduces the maneuver penalty to -10. However Biryn must still compensate for the increased overall weight and so much spend ranks on offsetting the increased Max maneuver penalty; a difference in this case of -30. Biryn prides himself on his longbow skills and so the smith adds fitted shoulders and split shoulders, this reduces the Missile Penalty to 0. All this comes at a cost, though. Smith's Smithying
