Rolemaster

Trial Module

This is a module I used to introduce many of the characters to Rolemaster for the first time.  It has all the basics, maneuvers, combat, weather.  It is based on an encounter in one of the Shadow World Sourcebooks.

The PC's are taking a shortcut through a small mountain range known as the Fangs.  It is a long climb in difficult weather conditions, the last few weeks have seen heavy snow fall and although it has eased off in the last couple of days, a blustery wind throws shards of powdered snow into all their faces.  There is a 5% chance of frostbite on some extremity.  Not being equipped with snow shoes and the like some of the weaker characters are becoming very tired and irritable.  There are a couple of the PC's who are from warmer climes and although they are aware of the cold, they do not realise but it is dulling their sense (-15% to perceptions)

Last night while camping, they heard a deep rumbling from further up in the mountain, and as they round a corner today the path ahead is blocked by a landslide of screen and treacherous powdered snow.

To their left is a small opening in the rock which they will see with a successful perception (+0) roll, this in turn leads to the base of a rock chimney, which ascends behind the face of a huge granite slab approximately sixty feet up.

To climb the chimney requires three successful +10 climbing maneuvers, to cross the landslide requires three successful medium (+0) (AGI+S-D/2) maneuvers.

With a rope on either of these the difficulty severity is reduced by one, although obviously with far less potentially lethal consequences.  The chimney climb is (STR+AGI/2) with the rope (no modifier) but can be attempted without rope and without climbing skill, but with a -25 to the roll.

If a character without a rope fails either of these rolls, then he or she may use either tumbling or gymnastics to try and deal with the (-10 difficulty) fall or suffer a D Krush crit.

After they have crossed these obstacles, they find themselves on a wide plateau.  As they stop to catch their breath they hear a loud whinny and a shape streaks past about 10 ft overhead.  Just as the flying horse registers on their senses, two pieces of the mountain detach themselves and come screaming down the cliff face straight towards the horse.  Anyone rolling a decent perception roll will see that two pursuers have a net suspended between them.  They are gargoyles.
